Sam Kerr made NWSL history Friday night, becoming the first player in league history to score 80 regular-season goals as Gotham FC rallied past the Kansas City Current 2-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.

The milestone goal also made Kerr the club's all-time leading regular-season scorer, with 31 goals for Gotham since arriving in the league. Per Yahoo Sports, Kerr redirected a pass from teammate Jaedyn Shaw past Kansas City goalkeeper Marisa Jordan before halftime to put Gotham ahead for good.

A Wild Start

The match opened at a frantic pace. Kansas City's Amelia White chipped in a goal just 22 seconds after kickoff, tying the record for the fastest goal in NWSL history. Gotham answered in the 13th minute when Midge Purce pounced after a Shaw free kick deflected off a Kansas City defender, leveling the score before Kerr's record-breaking strike put the hosts in front for good.

The win pushed Gotham FC to 13-3-4 on the season for 43 points, extending the club's lead atop the NWSL standings to seven points over the idle Washington Spirit, according to the Washington Post's weekend NWSL roundup. The result also stretched Gotham's unbeaten run to eight matches.

A Storied Career, Still Adding Chapters

Kerr, the longtime Chelsea forward and captain of Australia's national team, returned to the NWSL in free agency after a career that made her one of the most decorated strikers in the modern women's game, with Golden Boot-winning seasons in England's Women's Super League and more than a decade representing the Matildas. Friday's record-breaking goal adds another milestone to that résumé, and it comes as Gotham pushes for a deep playoff run behind one of the league's most potent attacks.

Kansas City, meanwhile, will look to regroup after a result that snapped its own recent momentum, with the Current still fighting to secure playoff positioning in the league's tightly packed middle tier.
