Jury to Begin Weighing Russell Brand's Fate as Deliberations Open Today
Brand took the stand last week and denied all seven charges against him; the judge told jurors to expect to start considering verdicts this Tuesday.
LONDON — Jurors in Russell Brand's rape and sexual assault trial are expected to begin deliberating Tuesday, a week after the comedian took the stand at Southwark Crown Court and denied all seven charges against him — three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault.
Brand testified that the accusations had a "devastating" impact on his life and told jurors he was wrong to use his fame to facilitate what he called "sexual access," though he denied the specific allegations. His wife, Laura Gallacher, testified in his defense, calling him an "amazing husband" and "wonderful father." Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told jurors Brand was "ruthless," "calculating" and "manipulative."
The judge told jurors at the end of last Wednesday's session that they would likely begin considering their verdicts this week. No verdict has yet been reported.
