Manchester United staged a jaw-dropping 3-2 comeback win over AS Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, erasing a two-goal deficit inside the opening 17 minutes to breathe fresh life into a miserable season and ease the pressure on under-fire manager Michael Carrick.

Roma struck twice in a chaotic start. Matías Soulé slammed home in the 11th minute after Rodrigo Mora's diagonal pass exposed a gap left by an advanced Diogo Dalot, and Donyell Malen converted a penalty six minutes later after Ayden Heaven was penalized for handball. United trailed 2-0 and were booed off at halftime, with green-and-gold balloons — a long-running protest against the Glazer family's ownership — cascading from the Stretford End before kickoff, and tennis balls thrown onto the pitch at the 20-minute, five-second mark in a pointed nod to the Glazers' 2005 leveraged buyout.

The second half flipped the script entirely. Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty in the 58th minute — his first attempt was saved by third-choice Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez, but Bryan Cristante's encroachment forced a retake. Matheus Cunha then took over, equalizing in the 83rd minute after Leonardo Balerdi misjudged a Fernandes cross, before slamming in the winner from close range just three minutes later to spark wild scenes around Old Trafford.

A season-defining night

The win — United's first in four matches and just their third of the campaign — arrived after a nine-match winless run had left Carrick's position "hanging by a thread," according to ESPN's match report. Cunha picked up two late bookings, one for a shirtless celebration in the crowd, but it didn't matter as United held on in front of 73,747 fans.

The result lifts United to 2-0-2 in the Champions League league phase table, a critical swing after back-to-back defeats to Atlético Madrid and Como had piled further pressure on the manager heading into the fixture.

Matheus Cunha's late brace secured Manchester United a jaw-dropping 3-2 comeback win against Roma on Tuesday to breathe new life into their season and ease some of the pressure on Michael Carrick.

Roma, who played much of the night without several key absentees, looked shellshocked once United found their intensity — Harry Maguire and Dalot both came close to adding a fourth before full time. For a club with a season of consistent underperformance, the manner of the win — grit, a raucous crowd, a talismanic Brazilian forward — offered the clearest signal yet that this United squad hasn't given up on Carrick, even if its ownership remains deeply unpopular with the Old Trafford faithful.

United next turn to Premier League business before a quick return to Champions League action later this month, with Carrick needing to show the comeback was a turning point rather than a one-off reprieve.
