LOS ANGELES — Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series starting in its second season in 1967 and reprised the role across seven feature films beginning in 1979, has died at 90.
Koenig's agent, Zachery McGinnis, said in a statement that the actor died overnight at his home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece, citing "old age" as the cause. Co-star George Takei posted a tribute calling him "more than Chekov," adding that he was "a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend."
Koenig also taught part-time at UCLA and other schools over the years. His son, Andrew Koenig, best known for playing Boner on Growing Pains, died in 2010 at 41; Koenig's wife, Judy Levitt, died in 2022.
