Soaked! Rain Wipes Out ALCS Game 4 — Guardians and Rays Now Face a Four-Night Sprint to the Pennant

Mother Nature just tightened the screws on the American League Championship Series. Game 4 between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays, originally slated for Friday night at Progressive Field, was scrapped entirely after persistent rain soaked the Cleveland infield. MLB first delayed the start, then pulled the plug around 9 p.m. ET, confirming the postponement in a statement reported by CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated's Fastball: "Due to inclement conditions, ALCS Game 4 between the Rays and Guardians has been postponed to Saturday at 8 p.m. ET."

That single washout just turned a leisurely best-of-seven into a sprint. With the off-day cushion gone, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are now set to play four games in four nights if the series goes the distance: Game 4 Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, Game 5 Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, and, if necessary, Games 6 and 7 on Monday and Tuesday.

The Guardians carry a 2-1 series lead into the rescheduled Game 4. Cleveland took the opener 7-3, Tampa Bay answered behind six strong innings from Freddy Peralta to even things at 3-1, and the Guardians grabbed the edge back Thursday in a tense 3-2 win at home. The compressed schedule now reshuffles both rotations: Cleveland is lined up to hand the ball to Foster Griffin for the rescheduled Game 4 and Parker Messick for Game 5, both working on four days' rest. Tampa Bay, for its part, could turn to Nick Martinez in Game 4, with Drew Rasmussen, Peralta and Griffin Jax lined up behind him — though every reliever in both pens now faces a real test of fatigue with zero cushion left on the calendar.

The stakes go well beyond who finishes the series first. Whoever wins the ALCS inherits a date with the Milwaukee Brewers, who are already waiting after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach their first World Series since 1982. The Fall Classic is penciled in to open October 23, meaning the extra rainout day eats directly into any recovery time the eventual AL pennant winner would have had before facing a rested Milwaukee club.

For now, both the Guardians and Rays are left re-setting bullpen plans and bracing for a stretch where every arm in the dugout could be needed on back-to-back-to-back nights. Cleveland just needs two more wins to reach its first World Series since the Jacobs Field era; Tampa Bay needs to win three of the remaining four to keep its own pennant hopes alive. Game 4 is now set for Saturday night at Progressive Field, with first pitch at 8 p.m. ET.
