The Spurs star shook off weeks of illness to set career bests across the board — points, rebounds and blocks — in a 112-111 win, pushing San Antonio to its sixth straight victory after an 0-2 start to the season.

Victor Wembanyama put together the best game of his young career on Wednesday night, pouring in 52 points with 24 rebounds and 8 blocks to lift the San Antonio Spurs past the Dallas Mavericks 112-111. All three numbers were career highs for the 22-year-old center, who has now powered the Spurs to six consecutive wins after they opened the season 0-2, including a loss to Oklahoma City.

The outburst came as Wembanyama was still working his way back to full health. "I haven't been feeling great lately," he said after the game, according to comments reported by the Associated Press and carried by CBS Sports, adding that he felt he had finally "got my legs back" against Dallas. "So it should be more like this, more often," he said.

A shot diet finally paying off

The night capped a stretch in which Wembanyama has leaned into a more efficient shot selection, cutting down on long two-pointers in favor of shots at the rim and from three. He is hitting 24% of his three-point attempts this season and is 11-for-36 on mid-range looks, a profile CBS Sports' own analysis of his "improved shot diet" credited with unlocking the kind of dominant two-way performance he produced against the Mavericks.

I CAN STILL DO MORE.

Even after the record-setting line, Wembanyama downplayed the ceiling on his game. "I can still do more," he said, noting that when his outside shot isn't falling, "that forces me into a style of play that is exhausting." The line suggested a player who sees Wednesday's performance less as a peak than as a floor for what he believes he's capable of as the season progresses.

Spurs riding a six-game streak

San Antonio's turnaround from its rocky 0-2 start has coincided almost exactly with Wembanyama regaining his health and rhythm. The Spurs have now won six in a row, a run that has repositioned them as one of the Western Conference's most dangerous teams heading into the back half of November. The club next hosts a divisional opponent later this week looking to extend the streak further.
