PA's Measles Nightmare Tops 900 Cases — Worst US Outbreak in 30 Years

Pennsylvania's measles crisis just blew past a grim new milestone. The state Department of Health confirmed Monday that 903 cases have now been logged across 39 counties in 2026 — 68 new infections added in less than a week — making it the largest and deadliest measles resurgence the country has seen in three decades.
The outbreak, which took root last spring in Lancaster County's close-knit Amish and Mennonite communities where vaccination rates run well below the herd-immunity threshold, has since spread statewide. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health's own outbreak dashboard, 176 patients have now required hospitalization, up from 164 just five days earlier.
Four Dead, Babies Born Infected
Four Pennsylvanians have died from measles-related complications this year — two infants from Amish families in Lancaster County, an 18-year-old from Mifflin County who suffered a fatal neurological complication, and a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County. It's the first time since 1992 that the US has recorded four measles deaths in a single year, according to CNN's reporting on the death toll.
Perhaps most alarming: doctors say the virus has begun crossing from mother to child in the womb. NBC News reported that at least six babies have now been born already infected with measles — a condition so rare in the US it had all but vanished — with two requiring intensive care for a disease physicians warn can cause lasting brain damage in newborns.

Lancaster County remains the epicenter, accounting for the largest single share of cases. State officials say crews have run more than 173 pop-up vaccination clinics since the outbreak began, administering thousands of MMR doses in an urgent bid to build a firebreak around the hardest-hit communities.
Nationally, measles — a disease the US officially eliminated in 2000 — has now logged well over 3,400 cases across 39 separate outbreaks this year, with Pennsylvania alone responsible for a staggering share of the total. Health officials are bracing for the count to keep climbing as flu season sets in and holiday travel picks up.
