Photo Finish Heartbreak: Briscoe Edges Teammate Bell by 0.029 Seconds at the Charlotte Roval

Chase Briscoe held off a last-corner lunge from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell to win the Bank of America ROVAL 400 by 0.029 seconds — his second straight victory, and Bell's record-breaking eighth runner-up finish of a still-winless season.

Chase Briscoe crossed the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval's finish line 0.029 seconds ahead of his own Joe Gibbs Racing teammate on Sunday, surviving a last-corner shove to win the Bank of America ROVAL 400 — the closest finish of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, and the second straight gut-punch handed to Christopher Bell.

Briscoe led the final 61 laps of the elimination race, but Bell refused to let him cruise to it. Coming to the white flag, Bell dove to the inside in the track's closing corner, made contact, and sent Briscoe's No. 19 Toyota into a brief wiggle. Briscoe gathered it up and held the lead to the stripe, according to the Associated Press, which clocked the margin at roughly half a car length.

A Record Nobody Wants

For Briscoe, it was a second consecutive playoff victory, following his Oct. 4 win at Las Vegas, and it locks him into the Round of 8 as the Cup Series playoffs barrel toward November. For Bell, it was something else entirely: his eighth runner-up finish of a still-winless 2026 season, one worse than the record he had shared with Harry Gant's 1981 mark just weeks earlier at Iowa.

"I THINK I'M JUST IN SHOCK RIGHT NOW. I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS GONNA END LIKE THAT." — CHRISTOPHER BELL

It was the latest and most painful entry in what NASCAR's own website had already dubbed a "season of second-place finishes" for Bell, whose 11 runner-up results since the start of 2025 are more than double any other driver on the circuit — including Briscoe and fellow JGR teammate Denny Hamlin, who have six apiece. Bell has come agonizingly close to victory lane all year without ever actually arriving.

The Roval race doubled as the cutoff event for the Round of 12, trimming the 12-driver playoff field to the eight who will race on for a championship. Briscoe's win guarantees his spot outright; Bell, who entered the day comfortably inside the cutline, advances on points but leaves Charlotte with nothing but the sting of a photo finish he could all but taste.

Neither driver has publicly called the contact dirty, and both are framing it as exactly the kind of racing a win-or-go-home cutoff demands. But as the Round of 8 opens, the two Joe Gibbs Racing teammates carry very different moods into it — one a two-time winner on a roll, the other still chasing his first checkered flag of the year by the thinnest of margins.
