GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave was carted off the field during Sunday's 31-7 rout of the Chicago Bears with what head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed is a torn Achilles tendon — an injury expected to end his 2026 season.

Hargrave, 33, went down in the fourth quarter while chasing Bears quarterback Case Keenum on a non-contact play, and was carted off with 1:53 remaining. "Early indications look like Achilles," LaFleur told reporters immediately after the game, adding that the injury "doesn't look good." He later confirmed the torn Achilles diagnosis, calling the outcome bittersweet given an otherwise dominant team performance.

Green Bay held Chicago to just 246 total yards and 81 rushing yards in the win, improving to 4-2 on the season. But the victory was overshadowed by the injury to Hargrave, who had just one tackle and one quarterback hit in the game and six tackles total across four appearances this season. He had already been managing a toe injury that left him questionable heading into Sunday, along with a knee issue and a concussion earlier in the year.

A costly loss up front

Hargrave signed with Green Bay as a free agent this offseason, his fifth team in an 11-year NFL career that's included stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2016-19), Philadelphia Eagles (2020-22), San Francisco 49ers (2023-24) and Minnesota Vikings (2024-25). He earned Pro Bowl selections with Philadelphia in 2021 and San Francisco in 2023, and carries 438 career tackles and 49 sacks across more than 150 games.

The timing stings for a Packers defensive line that was already thin on depth. Green Bay hosts the Dallas Cowboys on October 18, and the coaching staff will now have to rework its interior rotation without one of its most accomplished veterans for the remainder of the year. The team has not yet announced a roster move to fill Hargrave's spot.
