The letters just turned on Jim Thornton. Sony Pictures Television has suspended the longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer and is already recasting his booth job while it investigates allegations the studio has not made public.

"We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton," Sony Pictures Television said in a statement. "He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation." The studio did not say what the allegations involve or who brought them.

What is on the record is a tense scene at 35,000 feet. On May 14, a fellow passenger complained to a flight attendant about Thornton's behavior aboard American Airlines Flight 1276, prompting the pilot to radio ahead for police to meet the plane at Los Angeles International Airport. Officers questioned Thornton — reportedly still wearing a Wheel of Fortune jacket — on the tarmac before letting him go. "On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard," the airline confirmed.

Thornton's attorney pushed back hard on any suggestion of criminal conduct, telling reporters his client "did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime," and that officers cleared him within minutes and sent him on his way. Sony's suspension, and the fact that it's now three-and-a-half months later, suggests the probe has widened well past the airport tarmac.

Thornton stepped into the announcer's booth in 2011, filling the massive shoes left by Charlie O'Donnell, the voice of the wheel for nearly three decades before his death in 2010. Beyond the puzzle board, Thornton has lent his pipes to The Price Is Right, The Soup, The Cleveland Show and Pixar's Monsters, Inc. — a résumé that made him one of the most recognizable unseen voices on American television.

The timing stings for the franchise. Ryan Seacrest is gearing up to open a new syndicated season this month opposite Vanna White, and now producers must find a fresh voice to say "Wheel... of... Fortune!" before the cameras roll again. Sony has given no timeline for wrapping its investigation, and it's unclear whether Thornton's suspension will become permanent. For now, the wheel keeps spinning — just without the voice that's called it for a decade and a half.
