Niall Horan kicked off his Dinner Party: Live on Tour at Birmingham's Utilita Arena on Tuesday night — and by the time the lights came up for his closing number, there wasn't a dry eye in the building. As the singer wound down his song "End of an Era," written as a tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, Horan let a recording of Payne's own voice fill the arena instead of taking a final bow himself.

In the clip, played as the song faded out, Payne can be heard reflecting on the wild trajectory of his career with One Direction: "We thought something might happen, but never anything like this," he says, before adding, "I always try to remind myself of where I've come from and where I managed to get to in my life. It's amazing really." TMZ was first to publish footage of the moment, which spread quickly among One Direction fans still grieving Payne's death.

A Song Rewritten By Grief

"End of an Era" closes out Dinner Party, Horan's fourth solo album, released back in June and his fourth consecutive top-10 debut on the Billboard 200. According to Billboard's reporting, Horan had actually started writing the track years before Payne's death, but went back and reworked the lyrics after his former bandmate died in October 2024 following a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31.

Tuesday's show marked the UK opening night of Horan's first full arena tour since 2023's The Show: Live on Tour, and fans in the room described the tribute as a gut-punch nobody saw coming. It also echoes a similar moment from earlier this summer, when Harry Styles reportedly paid his own tribute to Payne during his final Wembley Stadium shows — underscoring how the surviving members of One Direction have each found their own way to keep their bandmate's memory alive on stage.

Horan, Payne, Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik were brought together as teenagers on The X Factor UK in 2010, going on to become one of the best-selling boy bands in history before splitting to pursue solo careers in 2016. Payne's death last year hit the group hard; his son was later named the sole beneficiary of his estate, and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy has continued to mark his birthday and other milestones publicly.

For Horan, Tuesday's tribute suggests the loss is still very present as he heads out on the road — with "End of an Era" now doubling as both a farewell and, in some strange way, a duet.
