Matthew Lillard is publicly second-guessing his decision to return for "Scream 7" after Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise in 2023 over her pro-Palestinian social media posts, telling a crowd at a "Scream" 30th-anniversary screening that he "blew it," according to TMZ and Variety.

"I'm on the wrong side of history for that," Lillard said, explaining he was too excited about rejoining the franchise to push back on Barrera's ouster at the time. He called Barrera "a beautiful actor" who "was fired for what she said," adding she's "on the right side of history."

Lillard's comments mark one of the more candid mea culpas from a "Scream" cast member since the controversy first erupted, and come as the franchise's next installment remains in the works without Barrera.
