Harry and Meghan Make First Joint UK Appearance Since Shock Return to Britain
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex toured a Nottingham youth charity and a food-poverty hub on Thursday, their first engagement together since quietly relocating from California back to the UK in August.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped out together in Nottingham on Thursday for their first joint public appearance since relocating from Montecito, California, back to the United Kingdom in late August — a return that ended a six-year stretch in the United States following their 2020 split from royal duties.
The couple's day began at the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in St Ann's, a youth organization offering music, recording and mentoring programs for young people facing instability or hardship. "It's great to be back," Meghan told onlookers as they arrived, according to Hello! Magazine. She later joined a group of local girls for a confidence-building, bracelet-making session, telling them to "be as kind to yourself as you would to your best friend."
A full day of engagements
From there, the pair traveled to Himmah Hub, a Nottingham food-poverty charity, where they marked the legacy of Together: Our Community Cookbook with a cooking session and an emotional reunion with women linked to the Grenfell community kitchen featured in the book. The day closed with informal activities at Epic Partners — pool, cupcake decorating and card games — where Meghan reportedly picked up the game Dobble and said she'd be buying a set for home.
Fans lined the streets with flowers and balloons. One 90-year-old local, Irene Hardman, brought a framed photo from the couple's first-ever joint walkabout in the same city back in December 2017, a nod to how long Nottingham has followed the pair's relationship.
Notably, the visit was not conducted in any official royal capacity. According to ITV News, King Charles stated last month that the couple should be treated as "private citizens" rather than working royals, meaning Thursday's itinerary — while echoing their pre-2020 public visits — carries no formal palace sign-off.
The appearance caps a tense few months. Harry lost a legal battle over his downgraded police protection in 2025, and as recently as June the couple cut short a UK trip after Meghan withdrew from scheduled London engagements citing security concerns. Since August's move, a fresh security risk assessment from the UK's protection review body (Ravec) has reportedly been pending, with Harry seeking reinstatement to the cohort that grants automatic police protection to senior public figures.
That Thursday's visit went ahead publicly, with the couple greeting crowds in the open, is being read by UK outlets as a sign Harry and Meghan now feel more settled with their current security footing. Neither Buckingham Palace nor Kensington Palace has issued comment on the outing. No further joint engagements have been announced. Attention now turns to the outcome of the Ravec review, which will likely shape how visible the Sussexes are willing to be in Britain going forward — and whether Thursday's low-key charity circuit marks the start of a broader re-entry into UK public life.
