Pro Football Hall of Famer Jack Ham was hospitalized in Seattle on Saturday after suffering a medical emergency, Penn State said, hours before the school's football team kicked off against Washington.

In a statement, Penn State said Ham, 77, was transported to the University of Washington Medical Center. The university did not release further details about his condition, according to ESPN.

Ham has served as the radio analyst for his alma mater's football broadcasts since 2000 and had traveled with the team to Seattle for Saturday's game against the Huskies.

A Steelers and Penn State icon

A Johnstown, Pennsylvania, native, Ham was an All-America linebacker at Penn State in 1970 before the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the second round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He went on to make six All-Pro teams and eight Pro Bowls over a 12-year career, winning four Super Bowl championships as part of the Steelers' dominant 1970s defense.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and the College Football Hall of Fame two years later, and he was later named to the NFL's 1970s All-Decade Team as well as the Steelers' and the league's all-time teams. The Steelers have also inducted him into their internal hall of honor.

Penn State and Steelers fans flooded social media with well-wishes for Ham following the announcement. Neither Penn State nor Ham's family had released further updates on his condition as of Saturday evening.
