Trump's Approval Craters to 34% as 71% Say America's on the Wrong Track

President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to 34 percent among U.S. adults, a new low for his second term, according to a new NBC News poll released Saturday morning. Sixty-six percent of adults disapprove of his performance, including 51 percent who say they "strongly" disapprove — also a second-term high. Among registered voters, the numbers are only slightly better: 39 percent approve, 61 percent disapprove.

The survey, conducted by the NBC News Decision Desk and SurveyMonkey from Sept. 28 to Oct. 12 among 19,135 adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, lands just over two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms. It found 71 percent of adults say the country is on the wrong track — the worst reading of Trump's term — while the share saying it's headed in the right direction has dropped into the 20s for the first time since he took office. On the generic congressional ballot, registered voters say they prefer Democrats over Republicans by 55 percent to 45 percent.

A warning sign on corruption and the economy

The poll's internals are grim for Republicans heading into the stretch run. Fifty-eight percent of adults say Trump's policies are hurting the country, versus 28 percent who say they're helping. Forty-four percent say their personal finances are worse than a year ago, and 67 percent call gas prices a "very" or "somewhat" serious problem. Skepticism runs deep even toward Trump's own signature promise: just 14 percent of adults — and only 28 percent of Republicans — expect to actually receive the $5,000 "Trump Dividend" payment he has floated if the GOP holds Congress; 71 percent don't expect to see it at all.

Perceptions of corruption have also hardened. Fifty-two percent say the current administration is more corrupt than previous ones, and 52 percent now say a Democratic-controlled House should move to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump. Favorability for both parties remains underwater — Democrats sit at 43 percent favorable to 57 percent unfavorable, Republicans at 37-63 — suggesting voters are souring on Washington broadly even as they break toward Democrats on the ballot.

The findings track with other recent surveys. A separate AP-NORC poll released Oct. 15 put Trump's approval at 36 percent, with 64 percent disapproving, and NBC's own running polling averages have shown Democrats building their widest generic-ballot lead of the cycle in recent weeks. Political Wire, which flagged the new numbers Saturday morning, called the approval figure a "dismal" new low.

The White House had not publicly responded to the new numbers as of Saturday. Republican strategists have previously argued that national approval polling understates GOP strength in the specific districts and states that will decide control of Congress, and Trump himself has repeatedly dismissed unfavorable surveys as "fake." With early voting already underway in several states, the poll suggests Democrats head into the final stretch with real momentum — and Republicans bracing for a rough Nov. 3.
