R&B singer Freddie Jackson, the velvet-voiced hitmaker behind "You Are My Lady" and "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Time's Sake)," has died at 69. His family confirmed the news on his official Instagram account on Monday.

The statement called Jackson "a kind, generous soul" whose songs "became the soundtrack to our love stories," and asked fans to keep his loved ones in their prayers. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Tributes flooded in from across the music world, including Sister Sledge's Kathy Sledge, who wrote "Rest in paradise, Freddie." Jackson scored 10 No. 1 singles on the Billboard R&B chart and earned two Grammy nominations during a career launched by his 1985 debut album.
