President Trump is set to host Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24, marking the first Chinese state visit to the U.S. capital in more than a decade and the two leaders' second summit of 2026.

The visit will include First Lady Peng Liyuan and is expected to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly gathering in New York that same month, according to records of the planned visit. It follows the two leaders' Beijing Summit in May, where they hashed out the framework for an ongoing trade truce.

Low expectations, high symbolism

Analysts don't expect the Washington summit to fundamentally reshape U.S.-China relations or produce a wave of new agreements. Instead, it's being framed as a "maintenance check" on the commitments made in Beijing, according to the Heritage Foundation's preview of the summit. Trump first floated the September date over the summer, telling reporters he expected to host Xi "around Sept. 24," per Bloomberg.

The summit lands amid renewed friction over AI policy and tariffs, with Beijing watching closely how Washington's internal debate over artificial intelligence development — and a fresh round of proposed sanctions targeting countries that keep trading with Russia — could spill into trade talks.

Security and protocol planning for the state visit is already underway, with high-level talks expected to touch on trade enforcement, technology export controls and regional security issues in the Indo-Pacific.
