King Charles Begins Historic Bahamas Visit as Nine-Day Caribbean Tour Opens Amid Ongoing Cancer Treatment
The King is making his first visit to the Bahamas as monarch before Queen Camilla joins him for a Commonwealth summit in Antigua and a landmark state visit to Guyana.
King Charles III is in the midst of a nine-day Caribbean tour that began Oct. 27 and runs through Nov. 4, opening with his first visit to the Bahamas since ascending the throne in 2022 — a milestone trip he is making solo, without Queen Camilla, in his capacity as the Bahamas' head of state.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the itinerary in late August: the King travels alone to Nassau, where Camilla will join him only once the tour reaches Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which runs Nov. 1-4. It marks Camilla's first official visit to Antigua and Barbuda, and the first stop for the King in the Bahamas as monarch, according to The Nassau Tribune.
A Packed Commonwealth Itinerary
After CHOGM wraps in Antigua, the royal couple continues to Guyana for a state visit marking 60 years of bilateral relations between the UK and the South American Commonwealth nation, a stop confirmed by Buckingham Palace alongside the rest of the nine-day schedule. The King remains head of state not just of the UK but of 14 other Commonwealth realms, including the Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, and several other Caribbean nations he is not visiting on this trip — a constitutional role that makes this kind of multi-stop regional tour a recurring, if logistically demanding, part of the job.
The tour continues even as the King manages an ongoing cancer diagnosis first disclosed in February 2024. Palace officials have said his treatment and workload have been managed around official engagements this year, and royal watchers have closely tracked how his schedule is paced on extended trips like this one. The 76-year-old monarch has kept up a full slate of Commonwealth duties despite the health constraints, a dynamic several UK outlets have noted in previewing the trip.
FIRST VISIT TO THE BAHAMAS AS MONARCH. FIRST CAMILLA TRIP TO ANTIGUA. A LANDMARK GUYANA VISIT TO CLOSE IT OUT.
CHOGM itself gathers heads of government from the 56-nation Commonwealth and typically sets priorities on trade, climate finance and governance for the bloc's smaller island and developing members — many of which, including Antigua and Barbuda and the Bahamas, remain highly exposed to hurricane damage and rising sea levels, issues expected to feature prominently on this year's agenda.
What's Next
The King and Queen are expected in Antigua within the next day or two as CHOGM formally opens, before the tour concludes with the Guyana state visit ahead of their return to the UK on Nov. 4.
