Gunfire erupted at a house party on Beulah Highway outside Sparta, Georgia, around 3 a.m. Sunday, wounding five people and leaving investigators with more questions than answers as the new week began.

One victim remained in critical condition as of Sunday, according to local authorities; the other four were reported in stable condition. Names, ages and genders of the victims have not been released, and investigators have not said how many shooters were involved or what set off the gunfire. No arrests had been announced as of Monday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Region 6 office in Milledgeville has taken over the case from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office — a standard handoff for a rural department suddenly facing a five-victim crime scene.

A Small County, A Big Case

Hancock County, home to roughly 8,700 people in the heart of Georgia's Black Belt region, doesn't carry the staffing of a big-city force, which is why the GBI routinely steps in on shootings with multiple victims. Sparta, the county seat, sits about 100 miles southeast of Atlanta.

FIVE HURT, ONE CRITICAL, ZERO ARRESTS — AND A COUNTY WAITING FOR ANSWERS

Local station Fox 5 Atlanta first reported the shooting Sunday morning, and few new details have emerged since as the investigation grinds on. Both the sheriff's office and the GBI are asking anyone with information about the shooting, including witnesses who were at the party, to come forward — the Hancock County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 706-444-6471, and the GBI's Region 6 office at 478-445-4173.

It is not yet clear who hosted the gathering or how large it was, only that it was large enough, and chaotic enough, to leave five people bleeding on a rural highway before sunrise. The Observer will update this story as the investigation develops and as victims' identities and conditions become available.
