Turkey blocked access to Wikipedia

The Turkish authorities have made another strike on freedom of speech on the Internet today, blocking access to the online Wikipedia encyclopedia. The blocking of Wikipedia in all languages was detected today at 8:00 am (Local time), as reported by Turkey Blocks on its website.

“The fact that the site is no longer available is due to internet filters used in Turkey to censure content,” as repored. Internet surveillance agencies have accused Turkey of blocking access to social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, particularly after fighter attacks.

The government has in the past refused to block the internet, arguing that the system is falling due to major use after major events. However, technical experts in internet monitoring organizations have argued that blackouts in social media are deliberate and are in part aimed at stopping dissemination of propaganda.
