US President Donald Trump today ratified the accession of Montenegro to NATO, as the White House announced. “Today President Donald Trump signed the instrument of ratification of the Protocol on the Accession of Montenegro to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization”, emphasizes the announcement of the American presidency.
Montenegro will become the 29th member of NATO, was invited to North East Alliance in December 2015 and the US Senate last month voted overwhelmingly in favor of the accession of the Balkan country in the Alliance. Aim and hope of this move is to send the US a message that will repel any attempt by Moscow to increase its influence in Europe.
Trump’s decision, although expected, is part of US relations with Russia, with US Secretary of Rex Tilerson arrives in Moscow on his first official visit. The American president will welcome Wednesday at the White House, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
