The creation by 2020 of a space force, a desire by President Donald Trump, who wants the US to “dominate space”, announced US Vice President Mike Pens.
“It is time to write the next chapter in the history of our armed forces to prepare for the next battlefield where the best and brave Americans will be called upon to prevent and defeat a new wave of threats against our people and our nation “Pence said in a speech to the military at the Pentagon.
“It is time to form the United States Space Force.”
As he said, the preparations are currently under way to build this sixth army space force, along with the US Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Air Force and the Coast Guard. However, the creation of the new military body will have to be approved by Congress, with Pence stressing that the process will move forward with the aim of building the sixth body by 2020.
Pence also asked Congress to approve an additional budget of $ 8 billion over the next 5 years. In May, Trump was instructed to set up a space force that would be independent of the aviation force.
“To defend the US is not enough to have just an American presence in space. We must have American sovereignty in space, “the Republican mogul said.
It should be noted, however, that the United States is a member of the Treaty of Principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of space, including the Moon and other Outer Space Treaty. This treaty prohibits the development of weapons of mass destruction in space and only allows the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies for peaceful purposes.
These announcements are part of Washington’s drive to intensify space exploration. The US wants to send robots to the Moon next year as a first step towards the return of astronauts to the Earth’s satellite for the first time since 1972. For these missions, NASA will work with private companies that have not yet been selected yet.
