The Joey Porter Jr. saga is finally over, and it ended the way these things usually do: with a trade.

The Steelers sent the cornerback to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder, closing out a monthslong standoff that stretched from training camp through the first three weeks of the regular season. Porter, a 2023 second-round pick out of Penn State, had been sidelined by a back injury and a stalled contract extension, with the two sides reportedly still far apart on guaranteed money as late as hours before Pittsburgh's Week 1 kickoff.

What Was Actually at Stake

Sources told ESPN the dispute centered on the structure of guaranteed money in a new deal, not just the total value — the kind of sticking point that can drag on for months when neither side wants to blink first. With Porter inactive and the relationship souring, Pittsburgh ultimately decided a modest draft-capital return beat continuing to carry a disgruntled, unavailable corner on the roster.

PORTER MUST MAKE DALLAS'S GAMEDAY ROSTER FOR TWO GAMES THIS SEASON FOR THE STEELERS TO COLLECT THE 2027 PICK.

For the Cowboys, the move is about shoring up a defense that's needed cornerback help all year. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has signaled since training camp that he'd spend draft picks to upgrade the roster for a win-now push, and Porter — talented enough to have been a top-50 pick just three years ago — was available at a price Dallas was comfortable paying once his holdout dragged into the season.

What's Next

Porter is expected to need time to get up to speed physically after missing the first three weeks, and the trade's conditional 2027 pick means Dallas has real incentive to get him on the field quickly rather than stash him. For the Steelers, the trade closes the book on a second-round investment that never quite paid off in Pittsburgh, while clearing a roster spot and a locker-room headache heading into the stretch run.
