Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Drops Season-High 43, Buries Dagger Three to Sink Cavaliers
A short-handed Thunder squad leaned entirely on its reigning MVP, who hit the go-ahead three with 32 seconds left to hand Cleveland its first loss at home.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a season-high 43 points and drilled the go-ahead three-pointer with 32.6 seconds left, lifting the Oklahoma City Thunder past the Cleveland Cavaliers 117-112 on Monday night and handing Cleveland its first home loss of the young season.
Gilgeous-Alexander shot 14-for-35 from the field with four three-pointers and eight assists, carrying a Thunder team that arrived in Cleveland banged up and reeling. The Washington Post reported Oklahoma City had lost roughly 40% of its starting lineup to injuries entering the night and came in off two straight losses by 20-plus points.
A fourth-quarter scare
Cleveland didn't go quietly. The Cavaliers caught fire from behind the arc in the third quarter, hitting 9 of 17 three-point attempts to claw back into a game Oklahoma City had controlled for stretches, according to ESPN's recap. The two sides traded the lead down the stretch before Gilgeous-Alexander's go-ahead three put the Thunder in front for good with just over half a minute remaining.
HE HAD THE LOOK IN HIS EYE.
Tulsa World's coverage framed the win as a response from a team that had looked overmatched in its two prior blowout losses, with Gilgeous-Alexander effectively willing Oklahoma City through a game it was not expected to control given the injury list. The win snapped a mini-skid for the defending conference contenders and dealt Cleveland its first defeat at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse this season.
What's next: The result came in the first half of a back-to-back for Oklahoma City, which had little time to celebrate before preparing for its next assignment on tighter rest. Cleveland, still considered one of the East's top contenders, will look to shake off its first home loss as the season's early stretch continues.
