Two rookie quarterbacks had wildly different Saturday nights in NFL preseason action, and the split screen said a lot about where each of their teams' quarterback rooms stand heading into the regular season.

In Los Angeles, Rams first-round pick Ty Simpson looked every bit like a steal. Entering in the second quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs, Simpson completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, guiding Los Angeles to a 20-12 win. It was his first taste of a live NFL pass rush, and by most accounts he handled it with poise.

A Rough Night in Cleveland

More than 1,500 miles away, the story was very different for Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders. Cleveland was blown out 34-10 by the Chicago Bears, and Sanders' own line reflected the lopsided score: 6 of 11 passing for 79 yards and an interception that sailed into the arms of Bears defensive back Beanie Bishop Jr. in the fourth quarter. Sanders did flash one bright moment, finding receiver Luke Floriea for a 35-yard gain in the third quarter, but the outing was otherwise forgettable.

Making matters worse for Sanders' case in the Browns' ongoing quarterback competition, incumbent starter Deshaun Watson outplayed him in his own return to game action. Watson, appearing in his first game in nearly two years, went 11 of 15 for 126 yards in the first half — though he also lost a fumble — and Yahoo Sports described his performance as giving him the edge in the battle for the starting job.

What It Means

Both games were part of a busy Saturday slate that also included the 49ers-Raiders, Jets-Giants and Cardinals-Broncos, part of the leaguewide Week 1 preseason wave. But the Simpson-Sanders contrast is drawing outsized attention given how differently each quarterback arrived in the league — Simpson as a trusted first-round investment for a win-now Rams team, Sanders as a polarizing fifth-round pick whose draft slide became one of the offseason's biggest storylines.

Bleacher Report's box score breakdown noted Sanders will get more chances to answer Saturday's performance before final roster cuts, with Cleveland's next preseason game not until August 21-22 as part of the league's Week 2 slate. For Simpson and the Rams, the debut buys him another week of goodwill — and a louder chorus of fans wondering how long it'll be before he's under center for real.

Neither team has committed to a Week 1 regular-season starter yet, and preseason snaps like Saturday's are exactly the evidence coaching staffs say they'll lean on when trimming rosters later this month. For McVay, Simpson's clean outing is one more data point in a quarterback evaluation the Rams have been careful not to rush. For Cleveland, Watson's health and performance now loom larger over Sanders' path to the field than his draft slide ever did.
