The Wild Card round chewed through three of its four series in a hurry, and by Wednesday night the 2026 MLB playoff bracket was almost complete — almost.

The White Sox swept the Astros to set up a rematch with division rival Cleveland, while the Yankees swept the Red Sox to land a date with Tampa Bay. On the National League side, the Padres finished off a dominant sweep of the Cubs, allowing Chicago's league-leading offense to score just once across the series.

San Diego's Statement Sweep

The Padres' pitching staff did the heavy lifting. San Diego limited the Cubs to just eight hits across 18 innings, with neither Pete Crow-Armstrong nor Alex Bregman managing one, before pinch-hitter Gavin Sheets sealed Game 2 with a two-run homer. The Padres now head to Milwaukee to open the NLDS against the Brewers, who finished with baseball's best regular-season record.

CHICAGO'S LEAGUE-LEADING LINEUP MANAGED JUST ONE RUN IN TWO GAMES.

The only piece still missing is the Phillies-Braves series, which goes to a decisive Game 3 Thursday night after Philadelphia forced the rubber match with an extra-innings win. Whoever survives will open the NLDS on the road against the Brewers' NL counterpart.

What the Division Series Look Like

On paper, the White Sox-Guardians series pits two rosters loaded with rookies against each other — Chicago led the AL Central for most of the season, but Cleveland caught fire down the stretch and now brings a deeper rotation, headlined by Parker Messick and closer Cade Smith. The Yankees-Rays series is shaping up as a pitching duel between two of the game's deepest staffs, with Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón for New York against Drew Rasmussen, Nick Martinez and trade pickup Freddy Peralta for Tampa Bay.

Game 1 of the White Sox-Guardians series is set for 1 p.m. ET Saturday at Progressive Field, with the Yankees and Rays following at 6:30 p.m. ET. The Padres-Brewers and Phillies/Braves-Brewers-or-whoever NLDS openers round out the weekend slate.

For now, all eyes are on Philadelphia and Atlanta. Win or go home, Thursday night settles it.
