The Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs closed out the NFL preseason exactly how they played it — cautiously, and without a winner. Seattle kicker Jason Myers pushed a 52-yard field goal attempt wide as time expired Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium, freezing the scoreboard at 9-9 and sending both teams into the regular season with identical 0-2-1 preseason records, according to Seahawks.com and the Associated Press.

The final kick capped a game that had already denied Myers once — he missed an extra point after Seattle's only touchdown — while Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made three of four field goals, including chip shots from 28, 24 and 19 yards, but clanked a 58-yarder off the upright in the third quarter. The tie was Kansas City's third straight winless preseason, with the Chiefs managing just one touchdown across all three exhibition games this summer.

The night's real story was on the other sideline. Seahawks backup quarterback Jalen Milroe completed 16 of 26 passes for 223 yards and a 4-yard touchdown to Nick Vannett, posting a 101.9 passer rating in what Field Gulls called his best outing in two seasons with the club, connecting on throws of 40 and 24 yards without an interception. Chiefs rookie Garrett Nussmeier answered with 22-of-34 passing for 198 yards but threw a pick.

Neither Mahomes Nor Darnold Suited Up

Both teams' actual starting quarterbacks stayed on the sideline all night, part of a pattern that held for the entire preseason. Patrick Mahomes has not appeared in a single exhibition snap this summer as he continues rehabbing the torn ACL and LCL in his left knee suffered last December, a decision Kansas City coach Andy Reid signaled a week in advance, per NBC Sports. Seattle's Sam Darnold was a healthy scratch in all three preseason games. Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III — last year's Super Bowl MVP for Seattle before signing with Kansas City in the offseason — managed just 4 yards on two carries against his former team, while Seahawks starters Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price sat out the whole preseason with injuries.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald, whose team is coming off a Super Bowl LX title, downplayed the scoreline afterward.

"It would have been great to close it out with a win, but as I just told our team, the body of work that they've been able to put together up to this point, I just tip my cap to our guys."

Macdonald added he was encouraged by camp performances from both units heading into the games that count, according to remarks published on Seahawks.com.

Both rosters must be trimmed to the 53-man limit by this weekend's league-wide cutdown deadline. The Chiefs open the regular season at home against the Broncos on Monday, September 14, while the Seahawks host the New England Patriots — a rematch of their Super Bowl LX meeting, which Seattle won 29-13 — on September 9.
