Aston Villa, the surprise pacesetter of this season's Champions League, travels to Camp Nou on Tuesday night to face Barcelona in the headline fixture of Matchday 4 of the competition's league phase — a meeting between a team that has yet to lose in Europe this season and a Barcelona side still searching for consistency.

Villa sit top of the 36-team league phase table with nine points from three wins in three games and a league-best plus-9 goal difference, a run that includes a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahce at home. Barcelona, by contrast, have taken six points from three matches — two wins and a loss — for a plus-5 goal difference that puts them in eighth place. Their European campaign so far has been a study in extremes: a 5-1 win over Feyenoord and a 4-1 away win at Galatasaray, bookended by a 4-2 defeat on the road against Paris Saint-Germain.

Odds favor the hosts, but barely

Despite Villa's superior record, betting markets and statistical models still lean toward Barcelona at home. CBS Sports' latest Champions League power rankings have both sides trending upward, and market-based projections from analytics site Squawka give Barcelona a 49% win probability against 32% for Villa, with Squawka's own model forecasting a narrow 2-1 Barcelona win. No fresh injury concerns have been reported for either side heading into kickoff at 9 p.m. CET (3 p.m. ET).

VILLA ARE UNBEATEN IN EUROPE THIS SEASON; BARCELONA HAVE WON TWO OF THREE BUT LEAK GOALS AT THE BACK

The match is one of ten fixtures being played Tuesday as part of Matchday 4, a slate that also includes Atletico Madrid hosting Bayern Munich, Manchester United against Roma, Villarreal facing Paris Saint-Germain, and Feyenoord against Inter Milan, among others. The remainder of the matchday's fixtures, including Arsenal's trip to Slavia Praha and Manchester City's visit to Leipzig, play out Wednesday.

What's next

A Barcelona win would move them level on points with several clubs chasing Villa near the top of the table, while a Villa win or draw would all but cement their status as one of the league phase's early surprise packages heading into the competition's final group-stage matchdays later this month.
