Giannis Finally Gets His First Win in Miami — and It Took an 0-4 Start to Get There
Giannis Antetokounmpo put up 24 points and 18 rebounds as the Heat beat the Hawks 129-117, snapping Miami's winless start to its first season with the former Bucks superstar.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is finally a winner in Miami. The two-time MVP had 24 points and 18 rebounds Wednesday night as the Heat beat the Atlanta Hawks 129-117, giving Miami its first victory of the season after an 0-4 start that had already raised eyebrows about the blockbuster trade that brought him south.
The win moved the Heat to 1-4 on the young season, while the Hawks dropped to 2-3. Guard Davion Mitchell added 10 assists for Miami, while Atlanta was led by Kingston Flemings' 23 points and Jalen Johnson's 11 assists and 9 rebounds.
A rocky start to a blockbuster pairing
The Heat acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee over the summer in one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history, sending Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and a package of draft picks to the Bucks. The move was meant to pair Antetokounmpo with All-Star center Bam Adebayo and fast-track a Miami championship window — but the Heat stumbled out of the gate, including a 131-106 loss to Minnesota in Antetokounmpo's debut and a defeat to Detroit that left the pairing still searching for its footing.
0-4 TO START. A KING'S-RANSOM TRADE. AND THEN, FINALLY, A WIN.
Wednesday's win in Atlanta looked like the version of the Heat the front office envisioned when it pulled off the trade: Antetokounmpo bulldozing his way to a double-double while a deep Miami roster — built around him and Adebayo — shared the ball well enough to outscore a Hawks team that had opened its own season 2-1.
What's next
It's one win in a five-game sample, and Miami's title-contender credentials will keep getting tested as the Heat try to find consistency with their new superstar. But after a winless week that had Miami fans bracing for an ugly transition season, the Heat now have something to build on heading into their next test.
