Nearly three months after the trade that ended one of the most dominant eras in recent NBA memory, Giannis Antetokounmpo will finally pull on a Miami Heat jersey for a game that counts for exactly nothing — and means a great deal anyway. The Heat and Toronto Raptors tip off tonight at 7 p.m. ET at Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City, marking the first NBA game of any kind ever played in the provincial capital.

The game is part of the league's expanding NBA Canada Games initiative, which this preseason also sends the LA Clippers to Vancouver. But the marquee draw in Quebec City is unmistakable: it's the on-court debut of a two-time MVP in a uniform nobody expected him to wear a year ago.

From Milwaukee to Miami

Antetokounmpo spent 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, delivering the franchise's first championship in 50 years in 2021 — a Finals MVP run in which he averaged 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists against Phoenix — along with two regular-season MVPs and a Defensive Player of the Year award. That chapter closed this summer in a blockbuster trade finalized just before the 2026 draft, with Milwaukee sending Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks and a second-rounder. The deal left the Bucks without a single player from their 2021 title roster.

Heat president Pat Riley has made clear the plan is to pair Antetokounmpo immediately with All-Star center Bam Adebayo to anchor a retooled Eastern Conference contender. Tonight's exhibition — however meaningless on the scoreboard — is the first public look at how that partnership moves on a basketball court.

"To be able to be a member of the Miami Heat is exciting. I can't wait to have fans cheering for us and giving them a show," Antetokounmpo said after a recent workout, reflecting on his move south.

Centre Vidéotron seats roughly 18,000 — a crowd that has never had an NBA game to call its own. Tickets for the game sold briskly after the league announced the matchup this summer, with Raptors fans and curious newcomers alike filling out the building for a franchise that trained in the city for several days beforehand.

For Toronto, the game is a homecoming of sorts after training camp at Université Laval; for Antetokounmpo, it's step one of a much longer audition. His actual regular-season debut in Heat colors comes Oct. 21 against Minnesota. Tonight is just the preview — but for a sport-starved city getting its first taste of the NBA, and for a superstar getting his first taste of a new team, it's a preview worth watching.
