Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane will miss the rest of the 2026 season after tearing his ACL in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team confirmed, placing him on injured reserve Monday and ending a breakout follow-up campaign before it really got going.

The injury came on a non-contact play. Achane planted his left leg to cut right on just his third carry of the game, and the knee gave out from underneath him before Chiefs safety Alohi Gilman arrived to finish the tackle, according to ESPN's report on the injury.

A Costly Blow for a Rebuilding Team

Achane signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension this offseason after a Pro Bowl 2025 season in which he racked up 1,838 yards from scrimmage and 12 total touchdowns, establishing himself as a foundational piece of Miami's offense. Head coach Jeff Hafley sounded grim discussing the injury after the game: "To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment, but I can't give you any other details until I have them."

With Jaylen Wright also inactive Sunday with foot and stinger issues, rookie Ollie Gordon II suddenly became Miami's only healthy running back, playing 61 of the team's 73 offensive snaps and scoring the Dolphins' only touchdown on 17 carries for 41 yards. Quarterback Malik Willis added 56 rushing yards on nine attempts, a sign of how thin the Dolphins backfield now looks heading into the rest of the season.

Achane's injury was one of several season-altering blows across the league this week. New York Giants pass rusher Brian Burns is believed to have suffered his own torn ACL in Sunday's win over Tennessee, tight end Josh Oliver tore a biceps in Tampa Bay's win and will need surgery, and Carolina quarterback Baker Mayfield will miss at least three weeks after dislocating his thumb in a loss to Minnesota, according to NFL.com's injury roundup. Minnesota, meanwhile, traded quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick as roster fallout from the injury wave continued into Monday.

The Dolphins, already off to a rocky start, now face the rest of the season leaning on Gordon, Willis and a healthy Wright, if he can return, to carry a backfield that was supposed to be anchored by Achane. Miami's front office is expected to explore the trade and waiver markets for reinforcements before the deadline.
