BYU knocked No. 2 Notre Dame out of the unbeaten ranks on Saturday night, holding off a furious fourth-quarter rally for a 28-24 win at LaVell Edwards Stadium that ended the Fighting Irish's 16-game winning streak. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier scored three different ways, and tight end Walker Lyons hauled in the go-ahead touchdown with 1:47 left, as the No. 8 Cougars survived Notre Dame driving to the doorstep on the final play.

Bachmeier threw a touchdown, ran for two more and caught one himself, becoming the only quarterback in BYU history to record a rushing and a receiving touchdown in the same game. His biggest moment came on third-and-goal late in the fourth quarter, when he found Lyons for a 6-yard score to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive and put BYU ahead 28-24.

Notre Dame got the ball back and nearly stole it away. CJ Carr converted a pair of fourth-down throws to push the Irish to BYU's 4-yard line with four seconds on the clock, but his final pass toward Jaden Greathouse in the end zone fell incomplete despite contact, sealing the upset.

The game had opened with chaos. Notre Dame defensive lineman Boubacar Traore was ejected for targeting roughly two and a half minutes in, and BYU built a 21-10 halftime lead that was the largest deficit Notre Dame had faced all season. The Irish nearly cut into it before the break, driving to the BYU 6 with six seconds left in the half, only for Carr to fumble a spike attempt in a call that stood up on review.

Notre Dame didn't fold. The Irish clawed back with a field goal after a BYU muffed punt, stopped a BYU fake punt attempt from its own 28, added another field goal, and finally took a 24-21 lead on Jonaz Walton's 3-yard touchdown run with 9:31 to play. Bachmeier threw an interception on BYU's response, but the Cougars' defense forced a punt and got the ball back one more time — enough for the winning drive.

A career night in Provo

Carr finished 27 of 49 for 261 yards for Notre Dame, with Greathouse catching eight passes for 125 yards in the losing effort. Bachmeier was 23 of 36 passing for 224 yards to go with his rushing and receiving touchdowns, while Nolan James Jr. added 77 yards and a score on 16 carries, and Lyons caught five passes for 49 yards.

The win pushes BYU to 6-0 on the season and hands Notre Dame its first loss since last year, snapping a streak in which the Irish had won 16 straight games, all by double digits. ESPN's box score confirms the final at 28-24.

"They wanted some pressure, we gave it to him, it worked out for us," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said afterward, crediting his staff and the Provo crowd.

The result is a gut punch for Notre Dame's playoff positioning and a marquee statement win for a BYU program that is now undefeated through seven games. NBC Sports and Bleacher Report both detailed the Irish's missed chance on the final snap. Both teams return to action next Saturday as the stretch run toward the College Football Playoff picture continues.
