White House Floats Nicki Minaj for Press Secretary After Staged Air Force One 'Interview'

A mock press briefing filmed aboard Air Force One has the rapper fielding real odds of landing the West Wing's most chaotic open job — even as the White House insists it's all a joke.

Nicki Minaj spent Sunday riding aboard Air Force One to a Michigan campaign rally with President Trump. By Monday, bettors on two prediction markets were pricing in the odds she'd leave with a government job.

White House communications director Steven Cheung filmed a two-minute, 13-second staged interview with Minaj at a table on the plane, peppering her with mock press-secretary questions about the economy, the president's campaign travel and his polling numbers. Minaj, playing along, credited Trump's business background and praised his negotiating instincts, according to footage reviewed by Yahoo Entertainment. She added that he could have taken it easier but chose to keep campaigning for Republican candidates instead.

Cheung then posted the clip on X with the caption: "Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! @NICKIMINAJ." The official White House account replied with a pair of eyes emoji, and adviser Alex Bruesewitz asked followers what they thought. Minaj's own response was two emoji — a U.S. flag and a sweating, grinning face — on a repost of the clip; a separate video from her cabin on the flight was tagged "#AirForceOneBARBIE."

A Job With No Shortage of Drama

The bit landed squarely on top of a press-secretary vacancy that has been chaos since Karoline Leavitt departed in August. Trump named Katie Zacharia to the post on October 9; she started October 12, held a single briefing the next day, and was gone within five days after acknowledging she had described herself as a lawyer without having passed the California bar. Trump later said he had urged her to reconsider stepping down amid the backlash.

None of Monday's posts amounted to an actual appointment, and the White House has not confirmed Minaj is genuinely under consideration. But the stunt was enough to move real money. According to Mediaite's tally of prediction-market pricing, Polymarket had Minaj at 8% odds of landing the job — third-best on the board, behind deputy press secretary Anna Kelly (18%) and CNN commentator Scott Jennings (9%). Kalshi, a rival market, had her at 4%.

"I THINK WE MAY HAVE FOUND THE NEW WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY"

It's not the first time the idea has circulated in jest. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Jimmy Fallon's "Tonight Show" ran its own mock Zacharia interview on October 19, capping it with a fictional bit naming Minaj as the successor — days before Cheung's real-world version turned the joke into a trending topic. At the Michigan rally itself, Minaj urged the crowd to back Republican candidates Mike Rogers and John James, according to Billboard's report on the trip.

Whether the bit has legs beyond a viral clip is anyone's guess — the press podium, for now, remains unfilled.
