The 83rd Venice Film Festival opened Wednesday on the Lido with Danny Boyle's "Ink," a drama following media mogul Rupert Murdoch's 1969 acquisition of The Sun, starring Guy Pearce as Murdoch, Jack O'Connell as editor Larry Lamb and Claire Foy as Jules Davies. The premiere closed with a standing ovation that ran nearly four and a half minutes, according to Variety.

The red carpet drew a heavy star turnout for opening day, including George and Amal Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Laura Dern, Jonathan Bailey and Werner Herzog, per TheWrap. The festival runs through Sept. 12 and is widely watched as an early marker of the fall awards season.
