Tom Cruise Tapped for AFI's Top Honor — His Biggest Hollywood Prize Yet
The American Film Institute says Tom Cruise will receive its 52nd Life Achievement Award next April, capping a film career that has grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide.
Tom Cruise will receive the American Film Institute's 52nd Life Achievement Award, the organization announced Wednesday, capping a film career that has grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide.
AFI said the gala tribute will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2027, with proceeds benefiting the organization's arts and education programs, according to AFI's official announcement. AFI board chair Kathleen Kennedy praised Cruise as "a global icon" and "an ambassador for American film."
Cruise joins a list of honorees that included Eddie Murphy, who received the 2026 award in April. The recognition comes even as Cruise's most recent film has drawn a mixed box-office and critical reception, underscoring that the award is built on his decades-long body of work rather than any single recent release.
