Tom Holland and Zendaya have a new box-office record to celebrate. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" crossed $2.022 billion at the global box office over the weekend, reaching the milestone in just 17 days — the second-fastest film in history to do it, behind only "Avengers: Endgame," which got there in 11 days back in 2019.

The Sony/Marvel superhero sequel added another $70 million domestically over its third weekend (Aug. 14-16), pushing its North American total to $785.8 million, according to Forbes. That edges past "Avatar's" $785.2 million domestic haul and puts the film within reach of "Spider-Man: No Way Home's" $814.9 million domestic record.

It's only the third film this decade to cross $2 billion worldwide, joining "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Ne Zha 2," per Variety.

A record-setting run from day one

The film has been breaking records since it opened July 31. Its $360 million domestic opening topped "Avengers: Endgame's" previous record of $357 million, and it became the fastest movie ever to reach $1 billion worldwide, hitting that mark in just six days. Of its roughly $2 billion total haul so far, about $1.2 billion has come from international markets.

Holland and Zendaya, who play Peter Parker and MJ, walked the film's London premiere red carpet on July 29 alongside the rest of the cast, according to Good Morning America.

With the film still playing in theaters and a lucrative Chinese release yet to fully play out in some tracking, industry analysts expect "Brand New Day" to keep climbing toward — and potentially past — "No Way Home's" all-time domestic Spider-Man record in the coming weeks. Sony has not yet commented on whether the film's success accelerates plans for a follow-up.
