A woman who accuses Russell Brand of rape told a London jury this week that she has no doubt about what happened to her in a hotel room more than two decades ago — delivering some of the most pointed testimony yet in the comedian-turned-actor's ongoing criminal trial.

Brand, 51, is standing trial at Southwark Crown Court on three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault, involving six different women between 1999 and 2009, according to reporting from The Nightly and TimesLIVE. He denies all of the charges and has told police he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.

"I Know He Raped Me"

The woman testifying this week told jurors she first met Brand at a fringe event tied to the 1999 Labour Party conference and invited him back to her hotel room to discuss a potential theatre project. She said she initially believed Brand was gay and felt "sexually safe" with him, only to later describe him turning "frightening" and "menacing." Under cross-examination from Brand's defense lawyer, Ian Winter, who suggested she would have simply left the room if she feared being raped, the woman held firm.

I KNOW HE RAPED ME. I SAID I DON'T WANT THIS

Asked why she didn't report the alleged assault to police at the time, she told the court she felt ashamed and didn't believe anyone would believe her — "this is 1999," she said, according to The Canberra Times' pool coverage of the proceedings. Jurors were shown video of a 2023 police interview in which the same woman is heard telling officers directly: "I'm reporting that Russell Brand did rape me."

Prosecutors Paint a Pattern

Prosecutors have cast Brand as what they called a "ruthless sexual predator" who allegedly used his rising fame — first as a stand-up comedian, then a television presenter, and eventually a Hollywood movie star — to access and allegedly assault women across the decade in question. The case marks the most serious legal reckoning yet for Brand, who built a reputation in the 2000s and 2010s as one of Britain's most recognizable comic exports before a string of allegations first surfaced publicly in 2023.

The trial is still in its early stages, with testimony from the remaining accusers and Brand's own defense yet to be heard. No end date for the proceedings at Southwark Crown Court has been publicly reported.
