"Practical Magic 2" flew to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend, dethroning "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" after a six-week run at No. 1, according to TheWrap. Warner Bros. had projected a $30 million to $35 million four-day domestic debut for the sequel, which reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens 28 years after the original "Practical Magic" underwhelmed critics but became a DVD-era cult favorite.

The follow-up opened in roughly 4,000 theaters and pulled in $3.5 million to $4 million in Thursday previews alone. Critics have been far less enchanted than early audiences: the film has landed in the mid-30s percent range on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Variety, which quoted critic Todd Gilchrist calling the movie "as cumbersome and overlong as the 28-year wait" between installments.
