Phil Collins is opening up about just how close his family came to losing him — and how it still brings his daughter Lily Collins to tears. The Genesis frontman, in comments reported by E! News, said the entire family gathered at a London hotel for four days last Christmas, where Lily broke down remembering how frightened she'd been that her own daughter would never meet her grandfather.

"She said, 'I never thought that my child would get to know her grandfather,'" Collins recalled, calling the moment "very touching, very moving." Lily's daughter, Tove, is now 20 months old, born to Lily and husband Charlie McDowell in early 2025.

Collins's fear wasn't abstract: in late 2023, he spent seven months hospitalized in Switzerland battling the effects of years of heavy drinking, at one point placed on life support as his kidneys and organs began failing, with family called in to say their goodbyes. Collins has previously described the ordeal in harrowing detail. Now 75, he says he's stayed sober ever since: "Needless to say, I haven't had a drink since."
