J. Cole Cancels Sacramento Show Hours Before Stage Time After Crew Member Dies in Highway Crash
A touring equipment driver was killed when his rig overturned on I-5 near Woodland early Thursday, prompting J. Cole to pull the plug on his Golden 1 Center stop on "The Fall-Off Tour" just hours before doors were set to open.
J. Cole's Thursday night stop on his "Fall-Off Tour" at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center was called off after a member of his touring crew was killed in a highway crash while hauling equipment for the show, the rapper and the venue confirmed.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 6 a.m. Thursday on southbound Interstate 5 near Woodland, roughly 20 miles from Sacramento. Investigators say the semi-truck hauling gear for that night's concert drifted onto the right shoulder; when the driver attempted to steer it back onto the freeway, the rig overturned. The driver, who CHP says was the truck's only occupant, was extricated from the wreckage and airlifted, but was later pronounced dead.
Golden 1 Center announced the cancellation Thursday afternoon, just hours before the 8 p.m. show was set to begin with doors originally scheduled for 7 p.m. "Following the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew in a trucking accident this morning, J. Cole's show scheduled for tonight, August 27, at Golden 1 Center has been canceled," the venue said in its statement.
"OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE CREW MEMBER'S FAMILY AND LOVED ONES DURING THIS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TIME."
That line, echoed in statements from both the artist's camp and the arena, was the extent of public comment as of Thursday night. Neither J. Cole's team nor Golden 1 Center has released the driver's name, and no cause beyond the CHP's account of the crash has been made public.
Refunds and what's next
The venue says fans who bought tickets through Ticketmaster will receive automatic refunds and don't need to take any action. Ticket holders who purchased through resellers or other outlets have been directed to seek reimbursement from their original point of purchase, according to TMZ's report on the cancellation.
As of Thursday night, no rescheduled date for the Sacramento stop had been announced. The Fall-Off Tour, which has taken J. Cole through arenas across North America this year, is scheduled to continue at other tour stops in the coming days, though it remains unclear whether the sudden loss will affect the broader schedule.
