DWTS Suspends Val Chmerkovskiy a Week Over 'Fresh Prince' Jab at Judge
A deleted TikTok joke referencing Will Smith's Oscars slap cost Val Chmerkovskiy a week on the ballroom floor — the first suspension of a pro dancer in the show's history.
"Dancing With the Stars" handed down a punishment nobody on the ballroom floor had ever seen: a professional dancer suspended for a week. The pro in the penalty box is Val Chmerkovskiy, a two-time champion and one of the franchise's longest-tenured names, and the reason is a deleted TikTok joke that viewers read as a veiled threat against a judge.
The trouble started after the October 13 episode, when judge Carrie Ann Inaba criticized a rule-breaking lift in a routine performed by Chmerkovskiy's wife, fellow pro Jenna Johnson, with partner Harry Shum Jr. Chmerkovskiy fired back online, writing "Put some respect on her name. She's trippin' talking to her like that," before posting to his TikTok Story: "You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night" — an unmistakable nod to Will Smith's 2022 Oscars slap of Chris Rock. He deleted the post soon after, but not before it had already been screenshotted and circulated widely.
The fallout
Inaba addressed it first, posting to Instagram to thank outlets for flagging the comment and asking pointedly, "So this is what we are doing now?" Chmerkovskiy apologized directly to her on Instagram Stories that Thursday, writing he "should have never made the reference" and regretted it deeply. It wasn't enough to head off a response from the show itself.
On Saturday, producer BBC Studios announced Chmerkovskiy would sit out the following week's "Dedication Night" episode entirely — a first-ever suspension of a professional dancer in the show's 20-plus-year history, according to multiple outlets covering the fallout.
"The well-being of everyone who works on 'Dancing With the Stars' is non-negotiable," BBC Studios said in its statement, calling the post "inappropriate" and out of step with the show's standards.
With Chmerkovskiy benched for the October 20 broadcast, his celebrity partner Jenna Dewan didn't go dark — recently eliminated pro Alan Bersten stepped in for the week, pairing with Dewan on a Viennese waltz to "Unchained Melody" dedicated to her late mother, according to TV Insider. Chmerkovskiy posted again over the weekend, calling it "a poor decision" made while trying to defend his wife, adding that Inaba "certainly didn't deserve to get caught in the middle of my bad judgment" and asking fans to send support to the cast during Dedication Night.
What's next
The suspension was explicitly limited to one week, meaning Chmerkovskiy is expected back on the ballroom floor for Season 35's next live show. Neither BBC Studios nor ABC has detailed any further disciplinary steps, and representatives for Inaba have not issued an additional statement beyond her initial Instagram post, per TheWrap. The incident has reopened a running debate among fans and critics over how far judges' critiques — and pros' public reactions to them — should go on a show built on both.
For now, "DWTS" moves forward with Chmerkovskiy's return expected next week, Dewan's season continuing under the spotlight of the switch-up, and Inaba back behind the judges' desk with the apology, but not necessarily the last word.
