How clouds warn us about earthquakes

Researchers in US and Canada studied 65 major earthquakes around the world together with testimonies and photos of people who were in these areas and found that, before the earthquake, clouds change color and an eerie blue and white light spreads in sky. They speculate, that it might not  be due to electrical stools formed when the rocks in the depths of the earth rub together, causing the earthquake. When the electric charge reaches the surface of the ground and comes in contact with air, this generates light.

For decades there were reports of this phenomenon in various parts of the planet. In the early 20th century, an Italian priest, Ignazio Galli, recorded 148 cases respectively from earthquakes that occurred between AD 89 and 1910. The phenomenon resurfaced in timeliness in the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, from three years ago, on February 22, 2011, when 182 people were killed. There were numerous testimonies of people who saw an eerie white and blue light falling on the clouds before, during and after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on the Richter scale, which leveled the city center.

Security cameras in various parts of the city and witnesses with their mobile phones recorded the phenomenon, leaving no trace of doubt about it’s appearance. The same thing happened in China, Sichuan Province, half an hour before the magnitude 7.9 Richter earthquake on May 12, 2008, which left behind 69,000 dead.

Based on new data, seismologists returned to the infos of the priest Ghali, applying modern scientific methods to analyze earthquake which occurred this light in the sky. Four Canadian and American scientists studied 65 earthquakes of 5 and above Richter magnitude , concluding that this mysterious light actually springs from the clouds. According to their explanation, in fact, light is due to the strong electric charges generated in the bowels of the earth by the friction of the rocks when they rise to the surface and interact with the air.
