Shopify Beats on Profit, Misses Everywhere Else — and Wall Street Punishes It Anyway

Shopify's Q3 earnings topped estimates, but misses on sales volume and a cautious Q4 outlook sent shares tumbling as much as 15% in a stock priced for perfection.

Shopify shares sank Tuesday after the e-commerce platform's third-quarter report delivered a profit beat wrapped around enough soft spots to spook investors who had bid the stock up to a demanding valuation. The company reported adjusted earnings of 49 cents per share, ahead of the roughly 46-to-47-cent consensus, according to Shopify's own SEC filing.

Revenue came in at $3.74 billion, up about 32% from a year earlier and essentially in line with the roughly $3.75 billion Wall Street expected. That headline growth wasn't enough to offset misses underneath it: gross merchandise volume, the total value of goods sold through Shopify's platform, landed at $119.15 billion against analyst estimates of $120.03 billion, and subscription gross profit of $661 million came in nearly $20 million short of the roughly $680 million Wall Street had modeled, per GuruFocus's breakdown of the quarter.

Guidance did the real damage

Shopify told investors to expect revenue growth in the "low thirties" percentage range for the fourth quarter — a deceleration investors read as a warning sign heading into the make-or-break holiday shopping season. CNBC reported shares fell roughly 9% in early trading, while other trackers showed steeper declines; BetaKit noted the stock had shed over 15% by the time markets digested the full report, with some premarket prints showing drops closer to 19%.

THE STOCK WAS TRADING AT ROUGHLY 87 TIMES 2026 EARNINGS GOING INTO THE REPORT.

That valuation is the backdrop analysts kept returning to. A stock priced at nearly 90 times forward earnings leaves almost no room for a quarter that merely meets expectations — let alone one with multiple metrics running below them. Ottawa-based Shopify has spent the past several years positioning itself as critical infrastructure for independent and mid-sized online retailers, competing with Amazon's marketplace model by selling merchants the tools to run their own storefronts.

What's next: Shopify's fourth-quarter results, covering the critical Black Friday and holiday stretch, will be the next real test of whether Tuesday's guidance was conservative hedging or a genuine signs of slowing momentum. Investors will be watching merchant growth and GMV trends closely for any confirmation either way.
