The Dad Who Stopped the Oregon School Shooter Finally Tells His Story — and Wishes He'd Saved More
Kaylub Giamanco, the father of two students at Silver Rail Elementary, says he followed the sound of gunfire into the building and shot the 16-year-old gunman — and still regrets every life he couldn't save.
Kaylub Giamanco, the 36-year-old Bend, Oregon man who stopped a mass shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School, is speaking publicly about the attack for the first time, nearly two weeks after it left three children and a teacher dead.
Giamanco was driving near the school when he heard gunfire and went inside, following the sound to where a 16-year-old gunman was attacking students and staff. He shot and killed the attacker, according to police accounts cited by WDBO.
A Father Twice Over at That School
Giamanco has two daughters who attend Silver Rail Elementary. His mother, Kenda Freeman, confirmed his identity to reporters in the days after the shooting and said he holds a concealed carry permit, according to ABC30.
A GREAT HERO
That's how President Trump described Giamanco publicly in the days after the attack, before his name had even been officially released by police, per coverage from KY3.
Police have also credited a teacher at the school who confronted the gunman directly — throwing her cellphone at him, tackling him and struggling to wrestle his weapon away before Giamanco arrived. Officials say she was not injured in the struggle.
"He Is Not Seeking Recognition"
In a family statement, Giamanco's relatives said he is overwhelmed in the aftermath and regrets not being able to save more lives. He has asked for privacy, the family said, and wants instead to thank the first responders, school staff and community who responded to the attack. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek had publicly praised the unnamed community member's intervention even before Giamanco was identified.
The three children killed in the attack were 5, 8 and 11 years old; one teacher also died. Investigators have not released a motive for the shooting, and the gunman's background remains under review by Oregon State Police.
