A woman who claimed to hear God speaking to her, was shown to have tumor in the brain. The woman was convinced that she was listening to God in her head and had even begun to self-heal after her “conversation” with God.
The woman, whose name has not been publicized, drew the attention of scientists at the University of Bern in Switzerland. Initially they thought she was mentally ill, but this “easy” diagnosis was not enough for scientists. When they made a MRI, they discovered that she had a tumor growing in her brain.
Professor of Psychiatric Neuroscience Sebastian Walther said:
“The volume was found in a network that is vital to the perception of speech, that’s what she was listening to.”
Due to the tumor that the woman had, she started and had symptoms similar to schizophrenia. Acoustic hallucinations, including hearing voices attributed to God, are relatively common symptoms in psychiatric patients.
Academics who have spent years on schizophrenia research believe that this case will help better understand the issue. They see it as evidence that schizophrenic symptoms are not caused throughout the brain, but through specific disorders in some areas
