Cigars and pipes increase the risk of cancer and premature death

Guilty were found cigars and pipes for cancer and premature death according to a new American study. Those who only smoke cigarettes have twice the risk of premature death from any cause than those who do not smoke at all, while those who smoke cigars only have a comparatively lower but still 20% increased risk of premature death.

The researchers, led by US Food and Drug Administration Carroll Kristensen (FDA), who made the publication in the American medical journal “JAMA Internal Medicine”, according to Reuters, analyzed data of 357,000 people.

Of those, 203,000 have never smoked anything, 57,000 smoked cigarettes every day, 1,100 pipe daily and 531 cigars every day. During the multi-year study, 51,150 people died of various causes. Daily cigarette, cigar or pipe users were at increased risk of death from smoking-related cancers such as the lungs, bladder, esophagus, larynx, mouth, and pancreas.

Everyday cigarette smokers were four times more likely to develop cancer compared to those who did not smoke at all. Daily cigar smokers were 61 percent more likely to die of cancer, while everyday cigar smokers were 58 percent more likely to die.

Even those who were not everyday cigarette smokers were at least six times more likely to die of lung cancer than non-smokers. They were also at least seven times more likely to die of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), four times more than oral cancer and 43% greater risk of cardiovascular death.

Daily smoking cigar smokers had the highest risk of death from lung cancer, while for pipe smokers this risk was increased by 51%. The new findings, as Kristenen said, “show the importance of smoking completely.”
