She had an “air of authority and reflectiveness astonishing in an infant,” according to former Prime Minister Winston Churchill upon seeing her when she was only 2 years old.
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on April 21, 1926, in Mayfair, London. Her parents the Duke and Duchess of York were later crowned King George VI and Queen Mother. Elizabeth grew up as little “Lilibet” with her younger sister Princess Margaret, who is now the Countess of Snowdon.
Elizabeth loved riding horses, playing with her dogs, and adored her grandfather, King George V, above all. In 1947, Elizabeth II married Prince Philip of Greece, who became the Duke of Edinburgh.
And in 1952, after her father passed away, Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen of Great Britain and the Common Wealth. She has since reigned for 64 years, which surpassed even Queen Victoria’s rule. During her life, Queen Elizabeth II had 4 children with Prince Philip: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex; and Prince Andrew, Duke of York.
And some things in life just never change, such as the Queen’s sensible nature, serious respect for her duties, and ardent love for Pembroke Welsh Corgis!
